Dwight A Holmquist
Dwight became a member of BHS formerly SPEBSQSA when he joined the Stockton Chapter in 1968 to which his Father (Floyd) also belonged. While in the Stockton Chapter, he sang lead in The Third Generation quartet and later Steamboat ‘round the Bend. In 1983 began singing lead in The Great Western Timbre Company (GWTC) with which he continues to sing today.
Dwight served as the chorus director of the Stockton Chapter on two separate occasions. During his first stent, the chapter won the NorCal East Chorus Championship and competed in District Finals twice. Dwight was also chosen BOTY while directing the chapter.
As stated, Dwight began singing with GWTC in 1983 as the new lead. The former lead Jack Liddell moved to baritone and the former baritone Ron Black moved to bass. Roger Smeds remained on tenor. The GWTC in this configuration performed on many barbershop and Sweet Adeline shows, as well as barbershop contests. In 1985 GWTC finished second in the District Quartet Contest. The following year Jack moved to Florida leaving the quartet searching for a new baritone. Gary Bolles joined GWTC in 1986. That year GWTC won the NorCal West Division Contest and ultimately won the FWD District Quartet Championship held in Sacramento, CA.
GWTC was the alternate to the 1986 International held in Salt Lake City. The following two years, GWTC qualified to represent the FWD in Hartford, CT (1987) and San Antonio, TX (1988) where they place 22nd and 15th respectively. Roger moved to Florida in 1989 and the quartet in this configuration had their swan song performance as the mic testers for the 1989 International Preliminaries.
At this point, GWTC in Dwight’s original GWTC configuration (Roger, Dwight, Jack & Ron) continued to sing and socialize, on a very sporadic basis, , until he, the baby of the quartet, turned 55 and they decided to get more serious, schedule some actual rehearsals (2 a year) and compete in the Senior division of the BHS beginning in 2006. All four joined the Martin/St. Lucie Chapter of the Sunshine District, of which Roger was already a member and have represented them each year since in the Senior’s Midwinter Contests. GWTC has earned 3rd and 4th place medals in Senior’s competition.
Dwight and his Father (Floyd) sang with the Sacramento Chapter for a number of years until Floyd suffered a major stroke in 1995 and could no longer continue to sing. During his time in Sacramento he served as the assistant director and worked with the chorus handling warm ups and craft. During this period of time the Sacramento Chapter qualified for District Finals and placed as high as 5th. Dwight also received the BOTY award from the Sacramento Chapter .
In 2010 Dwight became an active member of the newly formed California Delta Chapter and sings in the American River Chorus (ARC). ARC competed in its 1st NorCal divisional contest in Reno, NV and was chosen as the winning chorus. They will be competing in their 1st District Chorus Finals in Bakersfield, CA.
Dwight lives in Lodi, CA with the love of his live, his wife of 40 years, Susan. They have 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren. Dwight is retired after working 34 years for a Lodi, CA based independent bank as the VP-IS Operations Manger.
