Mike Spencer
Mike has been singing barbershop for thirty years. He has sung in more quartets than even he can remember. An avid tag singer and woodshedder, Mike joined the Society at the age of twelve after his dad, a long time barbershopper, dragged him down to a chapter meeting one night. Born in Cuba, New York, Mike spent most of his years in Racine, Wisconsin where he sang tenor, lead and baritone in many quartets; most notably the two time Land O’ Lakes District 2nd place medalist Center of Attention. He also sang and competed with the Racine Dairy Statesmen, Midwest Vocal Express, Town & Country and New Tradition choruses.
After graduating from The University of Wisconsin-Parkside in 1988, Mike moved to San Diego where he joined the Sun Harbor Chorus and held various positions from section leader to assistant director earning a 5th Place Bronze medal at the 1991 International Chorus Championships. Mike’s musical leadership talents also lead him to direct the Pacific Belle Chords, a women’s barbershop chorus of Harmony, Inc.
His Southern California quartet career began when the award winning Western Union was formed. Mike earned two Far Western District Championships, singing lead in 1994 with Western Union , and again in 1997 with Revival . Western Union represented the Far Western District at International four times. Revival went on to win the International Quartet Championship in 1998.
Currently, Mike sings with a quartet called Breakout. Based out of Binghamton, NY, they won the 2007 Seneca Land District quartet championship and recently represented the district at international in Philadelphia.
When not singing in a quartet, Mike focuses on his family (wife Kim, son Nick and daughter Emilee), his family business, and the education of youth where he is a director on the local school board.
